Hello! I have been experiencing palpitaions on and off for about a year now. I have had my EKG, event monitor, stress test and another test to make sure I have no blokage done about a year and a half ago. Everything came up normal except that I have Mitral Valve Prolapse(learned thru echocardiogram) Doctor said it was very mild, might be alittle regurgitation. [
Anyway, before the test I did not experience palpitations at all, just some discomfort, shortness of breath. However, about 5 months later after the tests I began having palpitations after some stress at work and still have them from time to time? Did I damage my heart muscle because of stress? Why all of a sudden I began feeling them?
My doctor did echocardiogram and placed me on 25 mg of Atenolol a day. It seemed to help with palpitaions, no noticable side effects. Is it harmful to continue taking the drug for the rest of my life? I really want it fixed thru radiowaves surgery or something?
The other night I had palpitations again. I was not too stressed and was feeling pretty good all day but at night I had quite a few till I fell asleep. I woke up in the morning and had a few more. Than I went back to sleep after taking my other pill. It is just so annoying!
My job requires me to travel some and I am scared at times to be alone on the road and having a series of palpitaions hapenning to me. Is there a surgery I can have to fix it?
Are palpitations bad for the heart and may damage it?
HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP! !! !! !! !! !

Thank you/

Well . .. Dear Olya, your almost complete case history still misses some necessary facts (evidence, I would rather say). What is your age, do you have smoking habit, what is your baseline heart rate during a day and at nighttime? Palpitations themselves do not seem to be of any real danger to your general health or the heart in particular. The etiology (cause) of such palpitations is usually benign, sometimes they appear due to the thyroid dysfunction, especially in young women. So, I don’ t think you life is threatened in any way, what you need is a complete (and fast) cardiovascular check up to reveal any weak points (if any) and correct recommendations on the lifestyle and medical therapy. You can continue with Atenolol, I would suggest add- on sedative therapy with Valocordin (35- 40 drops tid and at bedtime) or Novo- passit (15 ml 3- 4 times daily). Regards, S. M.
